Hornets post their first century of the season to ease past Oldham. Oldham had brought a team of only six players and the Hornets, with a full bench, knew the tactics to adopt immediately. Full Court man-to-man defence with the instruction to bring the opposition into foul trouble early. But the Titans were ready and were by far the best team in the first 5 minutes. The Hornets defence was weak and allowed the Titans to score of well work jump shots and 3 pointers. The Hornet shooting by contrast was inaccurate and only a couple of trade mark drives from Andy Rushton kept the score ticking for the Hornets. After 5 minutes the Hornets were 13-6 down and Coach Pickard called a time-out to make changes. New input tightened the defence for the Hornets and Tush and Sam Barnard both found gaps close in to score. Guy Johnson scored twice close to the end of the quarter but the Hornets still trailed by 5 having watch the Titans score 23 points - was an upset on the cards? Q2 showed that the game plan was to work as the Titans ran out of steam and the Hornets upped the tempo. Titans scored first through a free throw but that was to be their last scoring shot for 6 minutes as the Hornets piled on the pressure. John Whelan netted from close in, Danny Wareham sneaked past two players to lay up, Jon Print found his range and Paul Coleman muscled in to score from the free throw line after a huge offensive rebound. Tom Lee found his range from outside the 3 point line and Sam Bithell seemed to be everywhere making steals. The Hornets scored 20 points without reply and the Titans looked down and out, but they still had their pride and started to play for it and Jake Coventry, making his debut, had to find some real tough defence to stop his player scoring. The Hornet shooting range was found now and Tush, Sam and Tom all hit long shots to close out a quarter where the Hornets had scored 32 points. Gary Masson was on the score table today and must have had a sigh of relief when Q3 was over as it was one of the most high scoring quarters ever at Holmes Chapel as both teams decided defence was optional. The score for the quarter was 35-28. The key point was that after 5 minutes the Titan Captain Anthony Worthington fouled out leaving the remaining 5 players on court for the rest of the match. No one could stop Barney now who scored 10 points in the quarter, Tush Jon and Tom all picked up points from long range shots and by the end of the Quarter the Hornets had a 27 point lead. But the Titans weren't finished and dragged on the last of their reserves to play flowing basketball against a poor zone defence from the Hornets. Graham scored 8 points in quick succession for Oldham and it was 4 minutes before the Hornets penetrated the Titan Defence. Danny and John Whelan steadied the ship with good work close to the basket Barney started helping himself again too. Tush popped in the shot to take the Hornets passed 100 and Jon Print finished the scoring for the Hornets. But well done overall to the Titans who posted their highest score of the season too! |
