| Warrington play tough defence to take the sting out of the Hornets! | Report by Gregg Pickard |
|
Q1 started with a total lock down from the Hornets. Neither team found baskets easy to come by but after 6 minutes the Vikings had only scored from a solitary 3 pointer and great work in defence was matched by John Whelan and Sam Barnard in offence, pulling down rebounds to score close in. The Hornets lead by 3 at the end of the quarter. Q2 was almost the reverse of Q1. Warrington locked down their defence and now started to get their offence moving with drives at the basket. This resulted in Guy Johnson hitting foul trouble and this limited his game for the rest of the match. The Vikings scored 9 points before Sam Bithell answered with a 3 pointer for the Hornets. Sam popped another 3 pointer but towards the end of the Half the Hornets through some ill judged passes and were picked off for 3 fast breaks in a row. The Hornets were 5 down at the turn and needed a good start to the second half. It wasn’t to be as Vaughan, Perchard and Woods all landed 3 pointers in the first three minutes as the Vikings opened a 16 point lead that was too much for the Hornets to claw back. A time out was called and the Hornets were instructed to work at inside baskets and Sam Barnard and John Whelan again picked up points close in. The Hornets tried gamely to pull back the lead Jon Print, Danny Wareham and Paul Coleman all getting into the points and at one stage the lead was cut to 4, but the turnover mistakes came back and the pressure on Warrington was relieved. An experienced Warrington side played out the clock to win by 8. http://www.holmeschapelbasketball.co.uk/match_reports/Warrington_03-12-2007.php |
