Burnley hosted Bury at the St. Peter’s Centre on Friday 7th March in a top of the League clash with Hyland taking on the scoring mantle in the first quarter. Dave and Daz Bolt converted a field goal each, but Bury raced ahead to lead 10-20 going into the second. Bury continued to score despite Burnley’s efforts on defence, which were just not good enough. Hyland continued to rack up points for Burnley, Kirk and Cummins each gathering points, leaving Burnley trailing at the half 34-49. The half time talk by Burnley coach, Thompson coupled with rallying cries from the Burnley bench galvanised the home side whilst rattling the visitors. Cronin, Robinson and Madej played out of their skins on defence, as did Sinclair. Dave and Daz Bolt resumed form at the offensive end with the lead quashed to 60-67 with one quarter left. Burnley’s passing game improved, leading to a series of points for Sinlair, Daz Bolt and Cronin and with 3 minutes in the game, Burnley took the lead 74-73. A couple of uncontested shots by the visitors switched the lead again with the clock running down and it looked like the away side had nailed it with the score 81-75 with a minute and change to go. But Burnley had the momentum, charged on defence and forced Bury into poor shot attempts, which Sinclair and Dave Bolt converted to bring Burnley within striking distance, down by only two with forty seconds left. Bury converted a field goal, but the home side drove right back at them with Hyland’s converted free-throw. More tough defence from the home side forced another poor shot attempt, with Sinclair gathering the rebound and around 15 seconds left. A crafty pass to Dave Bolt led to a basket and a foul shot, which Dave converted to bring Burnley the lead 83-82. Bury found no answer in the dying seconds and Burnley claimed the victory that puts them joint top of the league again this season.
