MANCHESTER AREA BASKETBALL LEAGUE
2007/8 Season Match Reports 12th Dec 2007
Premier Division Cardinal Langley 73-87 Stockport Atlas
  Report by Nikos Silikas

This was a much closer than the final score line might suggest. C. Langley showed that they deserve to be a Premier League team. They are a young team full of energy and they were leading until 5 minutes before the end.

In the first quarter Stockport came out with more conviction and by playing very controlled in offence they were leading by 20-12. In the second quarter there was a reversal. C. Langley dominated the offensive and defensive boards, they were able to run the fast-break and get many second shots against a set defence. As a result they were leading at half-time by 41-31. Not many teams score over 40 points in a half against Stockport but they deserved it.

In the third quarter Stockport tightened the defence considerably and managed to get back into the game. C. Langley scored 11 points compared to 29 in the second quarter! So end of the third Stockport was trailing by 2. The last quarter was the more exciting one. The two teams were point by point till half way through the quarter. What seemed to give the edge to Stockport was a four-point play by Mike Greenough (3-pointer and a shot). That brought Stockport from being 2 points down to 2 points ahead and they were never down again. Shortly after, an 11-2 run by Stockport confirmed the final winner.

The two Siddals, Sid and Dave, led the scorers with 22 points each. Sid probably had his best game this season and he was dominant both offensively and defensively! Everybody helped and especially in the second half the team produced a spirited defence performance. Credit is due to Langley for their efforts.

Finally, it has to be said that Stockport for yet another game they were missing key players.
