Bury 97 Burnley 92 Prem Div 2006/7 Season Report by Peter Parker |
Burnley came to Bury last year and pulled off a one point win and their determination was apparent from the start. Burnley came out firing and hit shot after shot while Bury struggled to get anything going. Alan Hall, was hitting shots for Bury keeping them within touching distance and the visitors held an 8 point lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter the teams traded baskets with Burnley easily finding the basket close inside as Bury failed to rotate players in the zone defence. D Bolt for Burnley was shooting well edging Burnley to a 2 point lead at the half. Bury's new signing Usman Baba seemed to provide a spark with quick athletic moves inside, beating double teams and also hitting cutters to provide some hope for Bury. However Burnley's play was steady and scored on fast break points and quick shots and led by one going into the final quarter. Bury, not used to losing late in games needed to come up with some defensive stops. The fourth quarter started with Usman hitting 7 consecutive shots and the defense dug deep coming up with important stops to get back into the game. Still down with about five minutes remaining the tide swung on a three point shot and a steal by Mike Nichols cutting the lead to one. The momentum carried the team forward and Bury began to pull away. However, Bury failed to put the game away with missed foul shots and Burnely still had a foot in the door. Down by three Burnley still had hope but failed to capitalise and on the final play of the game Usman rose above a Burnley player and stuffed it as time expired to give Bury a 97 to 92 win. Alan Hall led players with 35 points with Usman making a good debut with 25 points. |
