MANCHESTER AREA BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Bury 96 MMU 74

Prem Div 2006/7 Season

Report by Peter Parker

With MMU ariving at Bury with only 6 players and arguably their best player missing, MMU had their work cut out if they were to return home with a win under their belts.

Bury soon dampened their spirits utilising the fast break and scoring at will with Usman Baba cutting inside for easy buckets. With eleven players Bury could afford to keep the intensity levels high, by denying the passing lanes and helping out defensivel. This allowed Bury to pull away to hold onto a 20 to 13 first quarter lead.

There was no let down in the second quarter as Tom Hope easily found gaps in the defense and made great internal passes.  Alan Hall, again was the usual suspect making tough shots from inside and out and Bury held a 19 point lead at the half.

The team were playing unselfishly and the rotation of the subs from coach Ste Graham (nursing an injury) enabled a fresh pair of legs on court at any given moment. The third belonged to Alan and Usman scoring all but 4 of the 24 points accumulated and provided Bury with a 75 - 52 lead going into the final.

Bury could have coasted and at times seemed vulnerable with missed defensive assignments but they re-grouped and stamped out any hope the visitors had. Seb Cain made some great plays as did Stu Jackson. Even Inside player Richard Seddon showed his outside touch witha three in the final couple of minutes helping the teamto a 96 to 74 point win.

The highlights involved potential dunk opportunities, Alan Hall had his first dunk in a game this season while Graham Greene lined one up only for the back of the rim to deny him drawing laughs from his team mates.

With the addition of Usman, Bury have found their missing piece of the puzzle and hope to go the rest of the season undefeated and claim their fifth straight title.

Alan and Usman led scorers with 31 and 22 points respectively.
