Oldham Titams 85 Warrington Vikings 67 Division 1, 2006/7 Season Report by Ian Brown |
The Comfortable Farewell |
Going over six weeks without a game, I think most of us were just looking forward to actually getting out there and PLAYING. We made our third visit of the season to Warrington's Ball Hall to play the Vikings, after playing Canute 1 and Canute 2 earlier on. The court suits our fast break style perfectly and I think we all enjoy playing there. We were again without forward Matt Thompson and coach Anthony Worthington was also sidelined for the evening. With Adrian Willey at the reigns, we hit the floor with a trio of Ryan Curley, James Burns & Ian Brown rotating through the back court, while Anthony Barrand and Adey took the forward spots. We started out quite lazy on the defensive end, but on the back of some strong offences, we soon gained a lead and never really looked back. Warrington's big man in the middle had a strong game at both ends of the floor, but when we were able to keep the ball out of his hands, we ran the floor extremely well and converted our easy opportunites. Stuart Wilson put in some excellent minutes off the bench at the point guard spot, distrubuting the ball solidly over four quarters. Anthony Barrand was a huge factor for us on the glass and seemed to pick up every missed shot attempt from Warrington, as well as a handful of our own. As we went into the second half, we continued to slowly put some points on the board, but more often than not, Warrington would counter with success. After a time out, we pushed into a full court man to man, before dropping back into a 2-1-2 every time we lost the ball. This proved to be the main factor in maintaining our double digit lead and forcing the home team into bad shot selection. James Burns was his usual consistent self and Jonny Harter showed a lot of hustle with his extra minutes off the bench. Our leadering scorers for the season though, were as effective as ever. Combining for 45 points, Adam Smith and Ryan Curley dominated the lane whenever they had the ball and made the most of their "and 1" opportunities. This was, with respect, a comfortable win for us away from home with two of our senior team missing. It's also the point where, as a team and individually, we will all have to step up our games going in to the second half of the season as we bid farewell to our joint leading scorer, Ryan Curley, as he returns home to Australia. For the likes of myself and Adam, its been a pleasure to reunite with Ryan over the last eight months after we first played with him as 13 year olds back at High School. The team are very grateful for his input, knowledge and leadership since his return and we wish him all the best back in Oz! |
