MMU 76 Burnley 79 Prem Div 19th October 2006 Report by Chris Kirk |
Burnley went to the University with a depleted squad of only 6 players plus coach 'Chalky' White pulling on his uniform for the first time in quite a while. Seeing a full team on the opposing bench, this was always going to be a hard-fought game. Tough play and strong team defence was the order of the day on both sides as the lead went back and forth over the first quarter, with Burnley ahead by 2 at the break. The lead was extended by as much as ten in the second, but that was quickly brought back down to 3 at the half. Over the course of the second half, tempers became frayed as neither side gave up an edge and the referees retained order with a couple of Technical fouls. But the real drama came towards the end of the fourth quater. With Burnley's primary scorer - Dave Bolt - fouled out along with second year forward Chris Kirk, the home side pulled into the lead but couldn't capatalise on their efforts and were only up by one when Darren Bolt went to the line for Burnley with 14 seconds left on the clock. Both shots rimmed out but Darren was quickest of the mark and put in his own rebound as well as being fouled again. This time he hit the free shot which left MMU two down and just 11 seconds to get off a shot. Their chance went when Burnley SG Alex Dempsey stole the ball and was fouled with one second left. He sank his second shot to end what was a very long, but very well contested match!! |
