MANCHESTER AREA BASKETBALL LEAGUE

MMU 1, 87 Bury 82

Prem Div 2006/7 Season

Report by Peter Parker

Bury's season has turned into a season of soul searching in an attempt to re-establish some kind of continuity, having endured injuries and retirement, the team must dig deep in order to make the playoffs.

Bury started well with a dunk by Ste Graham which helped Bury to a five to nil lead.  However, MMU came storming back with a sixteen to nil run.  In the last two minutes the teams traded baskets in a hurry including five three's.

In the second Graham Greene came off the bench energised and used his athleticism to get to the basket.  He also showed his outside touch with a three, but MMU kept the pressure up and held a seven point lead at the half.

The third began well for Bury and the team were moving well and getting inside points, and tied the game at 51 after an eight to nil run.  MMU countered with some easy baskets on Bury's sloppy defence and held a four point advantage going into the final quarter.

Lack of hustle and determination on defence has been Bury's thorn in their side this season, missing big men inside, the middle is a zone where the opposition can attack consistently which is how MMU capitalised on. Stu Jackson found his scoring touch to keep Bury within striking distance although MMU would not give up their lead easily.  Bury trailed by nine in the last minute and the game looked over.  However, through tactical fouling and some quick baskets, Bury pulled within three...yet it was too little too late.  MMU held on to win 87 to 82 handing Bury their seventh loss!

Ste Graham and Mike Nichols led scorers with 22 and 18 points.
