Oldham Spindles 68 Oxford Phoenix 65 Prem Div, 2006/7 Season Report by Ian Brown |
The home team Spindles were the quickest out of the blocks as they played hosts to the visiting Oxford Phoenix. On the back of some strong team defence, Oldham broke out into a 10 point lead, which they extended to 16 by the end of the first. The Visitors started the second period strong, going on an early 12-0 run. After forcing the Spindles into some bad shot selections and taking advantage of second chances on the offensive end, Phoenix held Oldham to just 6 second quarter points and had cut the lead to just 4 by the half. The dominant play of the under-manned away team continued into the second half where they rallied behind consecutive field goals from Paul Walton. With a 12 point defecit going in to the fourth, the Spindles turned to the veteran forward combo of John Lindsay and Rick Parker, who dominated inside and eventually tied the game at 65. After a free throw from Lindsay gave Oldham a one point lead, Phoenix turned the ball over and were forced to foul guard Alex Simmoneau who iced his two free throws and gave the Spindles the three point win. |
