Oldham 69 Stockport 90 2nd April 2007 Report by Mike Greenough |
Premier Title Returns to Stockport |
This was Stockport’s last game of the season and due to it being a re-arranged game they were missing several key members – the main one being the Coach Nick Silikas. This showed on the poor start to the game with normally consistent players struggling to find the basket even though having good open looks. However midway through the first quarter Stockport began to gel together and they began to take control of the game. The strong play by Gustav Karlberg became the
spark that they needed to fire them up. At the end of the 1st Stockport were up by 3 The second quarter saw Stockport playing good controlled ball for the first 7 mins, opening a 13 point lead with strong play again from Gustav Karlberg and 3 x three pointers from Mike Greenough. At the half Stockport were in the lead by 11 (45 -34). During the 3rd quarter the Stockport players began to show their dominance against a very spirited Oldham team and by the end of the 3rd they were ahead 53 – 71. This effectively closed the game for Stockport as Oldham never really caught up. Stockport ran out winners 90 – 69. Apart from the poor start this was another game where Stockport showed the strength of their bench with six of their players in double figures (Paul Robinson 10, Andy White 10, Dave Siddall 14, Noel Power 10, and Mike Greenough 14). The man of the match was Gustav Karlberg who not only top scored with 17 but gave the Team a much needed lift by his excellent hustle play. With this win the Premiership League Title returned to Stockport after a few years away at Bury. I would like to say big thanks to all the players who took part this season for Stockport. However I think that the biggest thanks should really go to Nikos Silikas, our Coach, who has had the difficult – no almost impossible job – of rotating a large bench, keeping most players happy (well, nearly all), and still having a successful winning season. |
