Oxford Phoenix 62 Burnley 76 Monday 26th March Prem Div Report by Chris Kirk |
| Buoyed by their return to form against Tropics two nights previously, Burnley went to Copley for their final away game of the regular season hoping to strengthen their spot in the Playoffs.
It turned out to be close match up all the way through against one of the surprise packages in the Premier Division this season. The young line ups put out by both sides ensured it was a sprint start with the teams going at full pelt for the opening quarter which finished 14-15 in favour of the visitors. Burnley's rookie, 6'8" Richard Bargh had a strong appearance in the second quarter, holding older and stronger players to minimal points on defence and showing off his excellent foot speed at the other end, only just rimming out a short shot under pressure from three defenders. Tom McEvoy's short stint in the game for Burnley was highlighted by a good pump fake and bank shot. There was still nothing between the two teams by half time with Burnley up by just one basket, 31-29. Both sets of players tried to tighten their grip on defence with no easy shots being given inside the paint. Despite this, Burnley's Chris Kirk had an excellent night on the boards on both ends of the floor. Oxford's answer was to put quicker forwards on the floor who managed a pair of threes but could not match their own production in the key. George Sinclair, however, was able to finish several drives for Burnley on his way to a game-high 23 points. The fourth quarter was blighted by a stream of fouls, sending Oxford into the penalty and allowing Burnley to spend the last three minutes shooting free throws and passing the ball around the corners of the court. Free shots swelled Donald Cummins points total to 12 along with Dave Bolt's 16 and Daz Bolt's 14. The final score of 76-62 gives Burnley a great boost going into their final game of the regular season against Blackpool at home. |
