Team History
Rainford Basketball Club was founded in 1977 by Cem Roberts, a PE Teacher at Rainford High School. The club initially played in the Merseyside League and were based at Burscough Sports Centre until the Sports Centre at Rainford High School was built in 1980.Cem Roberts was very committed to basketball and created a great tradition in the school, which unfortunately since his retirement has almost disappeared. His school teams were very successful both in the north west and nationally.
Rainford played successfully in the Merseyside Premier League until moving into the Manchester League in the late 1980s.
Whilst the school was a hotbed of basketball talent, in the eighties and early nineties, the club flourished running two teams and regular weekend clinincs. However, in recent years the club has just fielded one team in the First Division where they regularly make the play offs.
The current squad, pictured, has one striking characteristic which is a challenge for other clubs.
There are players in every decade from their teens to sixties! This includes two pairs of brothers and a father and son!
